I'm having the same problem here, and I also want to configure the computer for someone else who doesn't know much about computers.
I've tried three different modems. The only one that I managed to get working is an external one that I had to plug in the ttyS0 port. But that's where I need my mouse, so I can't use it. There's another serial port (a 24 pin), but I can't get the modem detected there.
The other two modems I tried with were internal. One of them, was an IDE card, and I don't know where to find it in /dev ; the other is a PCI one, which is listed in lspci as "Communication controller: Motorola: Unknown device 5608".
Any idea?
