Found the 3c59x.o file.

/lib/modules/2.4.26/kernel/drivers/net/3c59x.o

Loaded the module by updating the modprobe.conf to include
Code Sample
alias eth0 3c59x

After running modprobe 3c59x I see the module loaded with lsmod.

So at this point my guess is that my card is junk.  It has link likes and auto connects at the 100 speed.  The switch thinks its good.  But yet I can't get DHCP or a manual assigned IP to work.  My network has 5 other devices all running DHCP ok.

I am going to hunt down some other device to test the card in.  Might have to test it on a windoz box.

I did.  While watching in another terminal I can see that eth0 is started from the output of ifconfig and that packets are being sent, however the card itself doesn't show any activity.  I have use netcardconfig to update the static information as well.

After messing with that took I opt'ed to modify the interfaces config file directly and used the other if related tools.

I am going to test the card on another laptop to make sure it works.  Just for fun I stuck it in a powerbook g4.  It lights up and OS X knows that it is there and what it is, but nothing else.  I googles searched on that and found that is the most I will get from the MAC and this card...

My card works fine in Windows 2000 on some dell laptop.  Drivers built in.

I have not booted knoppix on the laptop I have DSL running in.  To get DSL running I used a boot floppy and the CD.  Does Knoppix have a boot floppy option?  or will the DSL floppy boot disk work to get knoppix running?  Just thoughts, I have not tried it.  Would knoppix be any different in terms of detecting and starting my network card?

Last night I ran knoppix on the dell laptop that I used to test the CARD with windows.  Knoppix didn't have any issues with the card.  Loaded up and ran using the 3c59x driver.

This leaves me to wonder if the pcmcia drivers aren't working for my old omnibook 2000cs or if the pcmcia slot is bad.  Still working on getting knoppix 3.4 to boot on the old laptop.
