So i have an old Pentium 166 i'm not using at the moment. I'm thinking....it would be nice if i could get a router, but i don't have the money, so i thought...why not grab the 166 and set it up in DSL? I'm thinking...it shouldn't be too hard to do. Only prob is that this machine has no HD, and i am doing this on a budget of $0. (everything else i need, i already have, including a bunch of NICs) The specs of the machine are the following:

P166
32 megs of RAM
no HD
floppy drive
8x CD-ROM
old crap 512k graphics card
a few old ISA NICs

TIA. :)

consider freesco

This will run great with your chosen hardware...
Once you have it up and running, throw this on top of it

Freesco Firewall for Paranoid People
This will "lock down" the house nicely...

...and be sure to check out all the plug-ins at freescosoft.com ..
You can add some very useful utilities to your router box...

Or you could try SMOOTHWALL

Which can install from a webserver using floppies...and provides a webgui configurator like a linksys or netgear router...is very compatible, user friendly, and work like a champ

SmoothWall Express is an open source firewall distribution based on the GNU/Linux operating system. Linux is the ideal choice for security systems; it is well proven, secure, highly configurable and freely††† available as open source code. SmoothWall includes a hardened subset of the GNU/Linux operating system, so there is no separate OS to install. Designed for ease of use, SmoothWall is configured via a web-based GUI, and requires absolutely no knowledge of Linux to install or use.

With only 32MB ram , and NO hard drive...
Isn't he going to have little to no success with
smoothwall requiring 540MB to 2GB HDspace?

And while it will run with 32MB ram,
64 or more is recommended?  right ?

I'd find a HD, since either smoothwall or astero have
much more eye candy than freesco..

They all do the same job with web serving, firewalling,
proxy serving, vnc and ftp access, and network monitoring.
