It may be that your PC's are too old: the Xvesa X-server requires a card that supports the vesa 2.0 standard, and I think this was published at the end of 1994. And as it takes some time to implement new standards, it may be that your PC's simply are too old, i.e. you can only use standard vga at 640X480@16 colours. You can check which resolutions and colour depths your PC's support by running the following command: Xvesa -listmodes
