push:
I found out, that maybe, the dsl-kernel needs a coprozessor. But isn't there a way to run it anyway.

Some time ago I did compile a kernel for PCs without coprocessor for DSL 0.7.0 - it may/may not work for later DSL versions:

I might have to give this a try.  I have come across a Gateway Handbook 486 with a SX chip in it.  I didn't think I would be able to find a 486SX compatable kernel for any distribution I could get my hands on.

The Gateway Handbook 486SX doesn't have any external drives so complining the kernel myself would be rough (and I don't have a 486SX desktop laying around, I checked).

After I get X running on my Fujitsu ST1000 (486DX4) I'll get back to the Handbook and let you know how that went.  BTW: Got DSL 0.8 HDD install running great on the ST1000.  Just need to get more than 8-MB ram to get X running to where I don't have to wait 30 min for it to load :)

The Slackware bare.i and lowmem.i kernels do support 386/486sx and I would guess that some other distros does as well.

You don't need a 386/486sx to compile a kernel with math emulation support, you can do that on any PC (faster is better), you only need to set/uncomment CONFIG_MATH_EMULATION=y in the kernel config file.

You probably need at least 16 MB to avoid swap hell. If you have 8 MB, I suggest that you try Basic Linux, http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/baslinux/.
