long story short told... actualy, i am a broken windows user and i'm trying to get involved into linux... i have an old dusty laptop, a p133 40Mb, and DSL is running much better than i thought it would, respect.

But there is a problem i ran into:

the laptop has a opti 82c930 chipset for sound, and the OSS, i think, dose not support it.

what could i do, to make my lappy dance?

i'm really a n00by to linux, and it would realy help if you could could talk to me with some advice.

btw.: plz talk sssslllooowwww, couse i'm " SPECIAL" to linux..  :O

i found out that ALSA, from http://www.alsa-project.org/ does support my sound chips...

so, my steps where:

Download the damn thing
Get it on my lappy
Uncompressed it into a tmp directory
ran the ./configure

result:

somethig like " no C compiler found..."

any sogestions...

Plz..

on my kneez, beg beg....

But if, for the sake of size or convenience, you prefer to use DSL's native OSS audio drivers it appears that Opti 82c9xx chips are supported by the OSS mad16 driver.
In the Linux kernel source files you can find some helpful information in /linux/Documentation/sound/Opti.  Here's the same file online - www.ibiblio.org/peanut/Kernel-2.6.10/sound/oss/Opti

Configuration will be similar to my explanation of ESS setup here - http://damnsmalllinux.org/cgi-bin....;t=4615
Just substitute "mad16" where you see "sb", and the "isapnp" option is not valid.  Run -
modinfo mad16
to check available options.
