Synaptic fans stay tuned... DSL 0.6+ which provides for so much more functionality is based on Knoppix 3.3. However Knoppix 3.3 and its use of newer level of libraries makes debian "stable" seem more like debian "stale". Not to knock "stable". As apt-get currently works on fully hard drive installed systems for installing the smaller gtk1.2 based programs. But to resolve the requirements for something like Synaptic requires much more, actually unstable. Look at what is part of the logon prompt of a fully installed system (testing/unstable). We are currently testing a new option for fully hard drive installed systems. This will allow for a complete restore of binaries and libraries as well as the package structure. Testing shows an error free Synaptic apt-get. And it only had to add 46.5MB of files! Any wonder why it will only be available to the fully hard drive installed systems. I believe even Klaus Knopper has said each new version of Knoppix will contain less apps as the bloat of the libraries and toolkits, as well as the apps themselves continue. Nonetheless, you will soon have an option.
