So it turns out booting (no hd) live usb into failsafe allows terminal use which when I tried to go there in normal boot took me beyond terminal mmediately into choices to re-login on whichever window manager I would choose. Odd. So for now it's failsafe. The old Lenovo t410 lappy seems to have 3 gigs of ram. So later tonight I'll try to apt install netsurf and report back. Thx!
By the way, I understand it's possible I have either 2 or 4 gigs of ram, just note a little under 4 when I use "free" in terminal.
