Why won't X start automatically?  I don't want to have to login at a prompt...it would be better for me if it went straight to X.  Is there a way to make it do that?

I assume you did a frugal or hd install and ask to be prompted for x..although new to linux and dsl when I insert dsl it autos to x and when I choose frugal or hd install it autos to x but  I could have made the choice to prompt for x..perhaps you made this choice? when the initial dsl screen pops up you have the time to press f2 and f3 which lists the boot options. or wait and it will boot to x via ram. if you have low ram you can choose to run from hd via the boot option tohd=/dev/hda1. this should also autox..if you choose frugal or install to hd from the menu once booted to x, it will install and boot to x..not sure if this helps. If you are wanting to do this already installed it may be possible to alter the boot menu..I unfortunately do not have this knowledge yet.

If you are talking about seeing the boot screen before DSL does it's hardware detection, then you can opt to put a restore file on a hard drive, or pendrive, or Zip drive, or even a floppy, which will hold your settings choices for X. That way, when you boot you just hit enter at the boot prompt and DSL will find the backup.tar.gz file wherever you have it and restore your X settings.

I want to bypass the command line login.  I want it to go straight to the window manager.

OK, then you need a bootloader, like grub or lilo. You can do a frugal grub install from the liveCD
