If I read your post correctly.. Both the XF86Config-4 files you were trying to use are for nvidia drivers, ( i.e. nvidia.dsl ) which is a separate download from the xfree86.dsl
Since you have an nvidia card, you should install the nvidia.dsl, then try to startup X again..
Otherwise, use the XVesa or other driver version of the XF86Config-4 file, to get Xfree running without the 3-D acceleration. ( there are several found on the internet for using the 2-D version of "nv" )
