I know this is an old post, but I just had this problem and figured it out. For those of you who need a solution, it is, in fact, the permissions that are the problem. To fix this:
1. Open Xterminal and type (without quotes) "sudo emelfm" 2. Browse to /home 3. Right Click on /dsl and go to Properties-->User/Group 4. The fields should be User: dsl Group: staff 5. Make sure that recurse directories is checked 6. Apply and restart
--EDIT-- My problem arose from editing a .dsl file. You may have a faulty .dsl, try moving any new or newly edited .dsls before restarting.
-------------- Good Luck
