Yes I seemed to have to that same problem so where along the lines of my install. I think it disappeared after reinstalling DSL.

I had that error when I was first learning to use DSL and Linux in general. Have you edited some files as root when you could've done otherwise? Permissions can be a touchy subject when launching certain programs.

editing existing files as root won't change permissions, but you have a good point....if a file in /home/dsl is owned by root and not readable/writeable by dsl there could be trouble

hmm, I dont remember if I was root or not. I just opened up the terminal window and edited it. Then I exited the gui and was going to go back in but ran into those problems. I didnt have a problem with the file before I had just read a post regarding it and was trying to learn more about it.

I know this is an old post, but I just had this problem and figured it out. For those of you who need a solution, it is, in fact, the permissions that are the problem. To fix this:

1. Open Xterminal and type (without quotes) "sudo emelfm"
2. Browse to /home
3. Right Click on /dsl and go to Properties-->User/Group
4. The fields should be User: dsl Group: staff
5. Make sure that recurse directories is checked
6. Apply and restart

--EDIT--
My problem arose from editing a .dsl file. You may have a faulty .dsl, try moving any new or newly edited .dsls before restarting.
