If you are using the default backup options in .filetool.lst and .xfiletool.lst, it should be backing up the majority of the contents of your /home/dsl dir.
Within it should be your /home/dsl/.xserverrc file, which contains your new mouse setup, generated from the xsetup.sh file.
DSL usually picks up your backup.tar.gz file automatically at boottime, unless you have multiple copies in your filesystems. Then it might pick up the wrong one first..
Try adding the backup option at boottime to yor startup options. " restore=hdXx "
i.e " dsl dma toram restore=hda3 mydsl=hda3 host=ke4nt_laptop1 secure "
