The quake2 is only the engine. The "maps" are copyrighted, and need to be supplied by you.
You can grab the shareware version, or if you have the CD, either M$ or Linux, you can pull the pak*.pak files from the baseq2 dir.
Once you have placed the *.pak files in your /home/dsl/.quake2/baseq2 directory the game will run.. keep it to 640x480 window unless you have LOTS of HP under the hood..
As for the gaim extension , try loading the gnu-utils.dsl first, as it has lots of the x window libraries in it.
