Wow! Found the solution, at least for me:

It integrates QEMU, kqemu and qvm86 in one bundle.
The host is a pathetic Win98 whose command line stack has been blown away to avoid custom scripts, but the qemu manager handles it beautifully.
If I can find one defect is that the manager says that kqemu is enabled while 'info kqemu' says it is disabled, but maybe this is a specific issue with win98, I'll probably post on the Qemu forum or the dev-mailing list.
Now I feel like replacing the standard qemu on the memory stick and try this manager with WinXp and see if I have any improvements.
