I am new to this forum. Not really new to linux, I used it years ago. But I am not a C or systems type programmer. Just database stuff. Period.
Ive used puppy and fedora recently. Have considered other things. Of course I am in the same case as some that at work I have to use windows. So I will be using VMware with some install of Linux as the host. I would love to use DSL as the host.
Now I realize someone does not have to be a systems programmer to make changes to DSL or linux. However, as pointed out by the first poster, there is a lot to do, read and study. I already have my hands full with studying web technologies. (PHP, MySQL, PEAR, etc.). For instance when I installed Fedora the screen would keep blanking if idle. I changed the power settings in the menu to not allow that. I changed the screen saver settings, to not allow it. Still it happened. After three days I finally found a solution on the net.
Anyhow I appreciate how many feel some of us should learn a lot of this stuff on our own. And a lot of us will, albeit gradually. However, again as the original poster pointed out, time is a commodity in some cases. So if we have resources (money), we are willing to pay for something instead. To speed its development. In fact a lot of open source is produced in this manner. We benefit in getting the thing we want sooner. The community benefits in getting it open source.
So rather than suggest a price, I would like to request one. I need DSL to run VMware Server natively. The reason I need server as opposed to player is because it can create virtual machines as well as play them. I would like this to be all on one bootable. I dont need a lot of other things on the CD. SSH yes. A tiny editor and browser (dillo?) yes. Just in case I have to do a couple of things outside of the virtual machines. Lastly I would like, if possible, the entire thing to run in ram.
Now I dont have any idea how much work this would be. Someone else posted a list of the things to do to create an alpha Vmware server with DSL. But I do not know if this is burned back to CD. If it is a lot of work to accomplish then I understand someone not doing it. If it could be done for a reasonable fee then it is something I am interested in. Remeber the VMware bare metal OS is 7grand. So reasonable would mean being able to compete with that.
Additionally, Puppy Linux allows one to write back to the DVD/CD if it was burned in multisession. (Dvds have to originally be burned from linux as a Doze bootable multisession DVD messes up). So being able to load DSL from a multisession, create a virtual machine with the already isntalled VMWare server on a hard drive, then being able to burn that VM back to the very same DVD would be a bonus.
Mostly this message is for the actual creators/developers of DSL. John I think? or Roberts? As he said above, right of first refusal.
I can be reached at this board or my email boscagarda-programming@yahoo.com. I will respond within a few hours of getting any emails, I check it throughout the day.
