You didn't give enough info to tell what you did when you installed, but assuming you didn't repartition and format Windows away, then you still have a partition with Windows on it, is that correct? If you know that to be a fact, then just install DSL from the tools menu after you boot up the live CD. Use the Frugal grub install and the last step will ask you if you have Windows on one of the partitions. Type y and it will install grub correctly.

I have the same problem but the solution in this thread doesnt work for me. I recently did a frugal grub install and the windows stopped working. When I select "Windows" to boot in my original WinME (which is on hda1), I get the following on an otherwise blank screen:

Booting 'Windows'

root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is fat, partition type 0xb
chainloader +1
makeactive
boot

And after this I have the cursor blinking. I wait for 20 mins and nothing happens. But when I restart my laptop (Sony vaio SR33 with 128 mb ram) and choose DSL in the grub menu, it boots me to my DSL perfectly fine. I went and checked my menu.lst within the GRUB folder and edited some things to my DSL boot option and made sure that the section on Windows dont have any # in front of the lines. Next I boot again and still the same problem with Windows but the new DSL options that I changed in menu.lst were working fine for me.

Can anyone help me retreive Windows?

I wonder if this has something to do file partitioning type. Does anyone know "0xb" partitioning type is correct. I didnt touch the FAT32 hda1 partition when partitioning the rest of the harddisk to make room for dsl.

Wonder if I did something terribly wrong and lost my hda1 partition totally. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
