How is your DSL installed...  Frugal?  Traditional Debian-style install?
What type of package is your XFree86...  myDSL? Debian package?

My theory on the cause of the problem:
.xserverrc is being backed up, but /etc/X11/XF86Config is not.

Did you have XFree working at all, or is it just not working after a reboot?
Is the XFree86.dsl package being installed when you boot?

Well, then....first thing would be to read the info file.  You did read the info file, yes?  If you know how to install a mydsl package then it was most likely installed.  The info file tells you the best it can about configuring it, but since every machine is different there's no way to do a step-by-step instruction for configuring xfree.

If you do what the info says, and it doesn't work, then take note of the specific errors you get ("no such file or directory n bla bla" is not a specific error message), and then come back here with the errors. Also try to remember what you tried so far.
