Automount doesn't exist in DSL.  Audio CD play without mounting because that's the way audio CDs work...the device is accessed directly rather than as a mounted filesystem.  What you should do is mount your mp3 CDs before trying to play them, since they are standard data CDs and mounting them is the only way to access the data as a standard file system.
