I am also having this problem on my Compaq Presario 1200 XL118 laptop with the Lucent 56K V.90 PCI DF modem.  I know it's a winmodem, but the drivers at http://www.heby.de/ltmodem don't work for me.

I would think that you might want to get the Wvdial.dsl add on to DSL, and
then once you have that available, look at the Wvdial section in my getting started guide here:
Getting Started Guide for Rapidweather Remaster of Damn Small Linux.
There is, however, a built in ppp setup in DSL that you can try, the info on getting it to work for you is in the Dillo getting started that comes up when your DSL CD boots to the desktop.

I tried that, but my modem wasn't detected.

You have to compile the lucent driver specifically for the DSL kernel, in case you haven't tried that yet.  This is the one thing that has kept me from getting online with DSL....I've done it in Suse and Slackware, but the idea sounds like a pain in the butt in DSL, since there is little in the way of development tools available.
