You could try connecting to your modem with Microcom and type

AT

and see if you get an

OK

back from the modem.

ok, i tried Microcom and it failed, so i downloaded wvDial...
wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.53
--> Warning: section [Dialer Defaults] does not exist in wvdial.conf.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Configuration does not specify a valid phone number.
--> Configuration does not specify a valid login name.
--> Configuration does not specify a valid password.

(END)

wvdialconf
Usage: wvdialconf <configfile-name>
(create/update a wvdial.conf file automatically)
(END)

wvdialconf configname-wvdial
Scanning your serial ports for a modem.

Port Scan<*1>: S4S5 S6 S7
ttyS14<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- OK
ttyS14<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 Z -- OK
ttyS14<*1>: ATQ0 V1 S0=0 -- OK
ttyS14<*1>: ATQ0 V1 S0=0 &C1 -- OK
ttyS14<*1>: ATQ0 V1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 -- OK
ttyS14<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 -- OK
ttyS14<*1>: Modem Indentifier: ATI -- LT V.92 Data+Fax Modem Version 8.30
ttyS14<*1>: Speed 4800: AT -- OK
(all speeds OK)
ttyS14<*1>: Max speed is 115200; that should be safe.
ttyS14<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 -- OK

Found a modem on /dev/ttyS14.
configname-wvdial<Warn>: Can't read config file configname-wvdial: No such file or directory
Modem configuration written to configname-wvdial.
ttyS14<Info>: Speed 115200; init "ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0"

so, i'm unable to edit wvdialconf in xterm or emelfm

weird, tried wvdialconf again, and now it says it can't find the modem.

XTERM: wvdialconf wvdial.conf

Sorry, no modem was detected! Is it in use by another program?
Did you configure it properly with setserial?
