so i tried booting from the cd, it works fine except for one thing

when it gets to the desktop everything loads fine, but the colours are all wrong

You might give this a try: http://damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/index.php/Vga%3Dxxx

Otherwise, you could use the boot option for xsetup at the boot prompt:

dsl xsetup

It will ask you some questions. You might want to try the xfbdev options.

When you finish answering the question and choosing the options, if it still does not look correct, you can to this:

Ctrl+Alt+Backspace

This kills X and leaves you at a command prompt.

Then do this:

xsetup.sh

You can go thru the options again. When done choosing, do this:

startx

That will try to start X again using the options that you have chosen.

You can keep going thru this until you find what works.

Good luck.

That looks like a color depth issue. Thanks for the screen shot, by-the-way. I wish se had seen that a long time ago when others here were having screen issues with the IBM 600 series laptops. I think some have reported success with dsl vga=788

i have managed to get it to boot from the harddrive FINALY ...... except now im having that diplay issue again....... and after running xsetup.sh a million times and trying EVERY SINGLE display setting possible i have still come out with nothing.......

i had it working fine before putting in on the hard drive.

that boot: prompt does not come up anymore instead i gat a GRUB menu or something......

it has a couple settings there and im able to edit some sort of code line, but im unfamiliar with it so i dont know what to change..... but it has "vga=791" in that line of code i just dont know how to change it

thanks for the help guys

I have exactly the same display issues on my 1400i Think Pad 300MHz PII w/ 192Mb Ram and 20GB HD. I have tried to install on the HD but get hung up and wait and wait and wait. I thought this was supposed to be the quick and easy Linux? I am writing this from my 700MHz Celeron Think Pad using DSL Live CD. Could it be the 1400i dose not have the balls to run DSL? I thought DSL was so light it would run on almost anything?
Does anyone have input?   Thank you
