I have had 3 ThinkPad's. 1. 600E, 366 Mhz, 128 Mb 2. T21, 800 Mhz, 256 Mb 3. T42, 1.6Ghz, 1Gb
On all three of them, I was able to use the xsetup.sh script to get 1024x768 24bit color. It's been a while, so I do not remember exactly what the settings were, but I know it works. They all had more than enuf power to run DSL. I did not do hard drive installs on them, because DSL is primarily designed to run Live or frugal and 'toram.' They all did GREAT 'toram' while saving configs, settings, etc. on a USB memory stick. The point is, these machines have more than adequate power to run DSL. There are people running DSL on 100Mhz machines and less. It is amazing.
Unfortunately, I do not have a cut and dried solution, but I know DSL will run just fine on these ThinkPad's. I did a quick search of the forums and just quickly looked at a couple of the search results, they look promising. You might want to take a look:

Good luck.
