I have had the same problem with one of my companies Dell D610s, using DSL 2.2, 2.2b, and 2.3. Within the D610 series there are several hardware configurations, particularly for the video. I think this may be the issue. The configuration we use is:
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 750 (1.86GHz) 14.1 SXGA+, RADEON X300 [ Add $170.00 ]
Also, I attempted to boot with the different options available, and while they did not work, I was at least able to view the following error with the second video option listed under F2.
Code: Bad EIP Value <0> Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!
