First I wanna say that DSL is a great thing! I love the idea of having a very small OS that is enough for all you wanna do! And I wanna say, that the following description of some problems I have found does not lower my enthusiasm! DSL is a great project which is worth to be supported:

That's why I want to point to some problems when doing "advanced" things with DSL version 1.0.1. First I used the boot mode F3. There is a little typo: it should be 1024x768 and not 10214x768 or something (a number like this). The hd-installation worked fine (even my Win98 system is still available; unfortunately other Linux distro installations cannot do so)! But when I wanted to shutdown my computer after using the HD-installed DSL there is shown "KNOPPIX halted" in green letters after "sending Kill signal......" and so on. This should be "DSL halted". (is it possible to show "Now you can turn off your PC"? My PC didn't turn off automatically, and when pressing the power button to early the PC freezes and I cannot press the power button (it didn't work)! I only could reboot my PC with the reboot button. Only when waiting until the PC/HD is getting a bit more silent (sleep mode?) the power button works! A message would be great to know when someone is allowed to push the power button)

Software: I wanted to have the newest and safest version of Firefox. Therefore I had to install 1.0PR (i do not know why, but installing 1.0.3 instantly didn't work) by using MyDSL (a really great and easy way of getting software!). Now I was able to install Firefox 1.0.3 with the installer of firefox-browser.de. It worked fine, even üöäÜÖÄ, but I could not type in [{\²³~ when using Firefox 1.0.3. So I tried to type in my text in Beaver. But when using Beaver I recognized that I cannot type in üöäÜÖÄ (as a German user of DSL with the de-Latin1-nodeadkeys key map)! But [{\²³~ was working on Beaver!? Strange, isn't it? So I considered installing Abiword with the help of MyDSL. First there was a checksum error. On the second run it worked out. But I had to notice that Mozilla Firefox was not working any more (no version, not 0.9, not 1.0PR and not 1.0.3) . When trying to start Firefox out of emelFM (as superuser) a message containing "...pango error..." was shown! --- I hope you can help me with this problems, and I hope I can help you to improve this auspicious distro! --- Melancholie

DSL is derived from Knoppix. Therefore there is a directory called KNOPPIX and on starting Knoppix is mentioned and so when halting.
We acknowledge the other distro. That is all.

As for shutting down, 1.0.1 shuts down from the HDD install and switches off the machine nicely. I think this is the best looking DSL too!!

You will learn more about DSL if you try it out a lot as a LiveCD. Try all the software in it (not just the ones with icons on desktop).

Download the other stuff you want and try them out. Remember some are experiment and you need to show the problems and solve them and let everyone know. If you cannot - ask.But first read the HowTos in the forum, carefully.

Welcome and good luck!

Ok, but there is still this typo on the "F3" screen, the problem with the umlauts and/or [{\²³~ with some programs and the switch off problem.

Firefox (seems to work properly now): I installed Firefox 1.0.3 with the installer of www.firefox-browser.de to have a German edition of firefox. But before I installed Firefox1.0.3 I installed GTK2 (with myDSL). This had not been working, so I had installed Firefox 1.0PR (with myDSL). Then I installed 1.0.3. The installation of Abiword (with myDSL) after this seems to have inactivated/turned off GTK2! A right click on desktop->myDSL->Update to GTK2 solved the not starting problem of firefox 1.0.3, I think! By "reactivating"(?) GTK2, Firefox 1.0.3 is working again (even after a reboot)! --- With best wishes, Melancholie

i'm curious to know if you are using the abiword.dsl ,
which is a very early version of abiword,
or the abiword-gtk2-2.0.10.dsl version ?

The earlier one was a complete package that probably has within it
some earlier versions of libs and deps that would cause
the issue you see with the later firefoxes.

The *-gtk2-*.dsl apps in the gtk2 portion of the repository all have elements
of gtk2, defoma, pango, perl, etc., etc.,  removed from the packages.
They share the same gtk2.dsl package, so no overwriting occurs,
and they should get along harmoniously.

Let us know.
