John,

Have you ever tried out the rox-filer file manager?

It is a small, fast, easy-to-use and sophisticated file manager that runs well on older hardware. In addition to a file manager, it also performs the function of a "desktop icon" tool and a thumbnail picture browser.

I don't know how much space is used in Debian, but the Peanut Linux *.rpm is 358k + the baseutils *.rpm is 115k = total 473k (Including Postscipt documentation)

The "pinboard" function is the desktop icon tool in rox-filer.
Rox also supports file association with automatic application launching, VFS support (so you can browse inside .gz files with the file manager), drag and drop support, automatic refreshing of the folder contents, and sophisticated file search tool ( IE: Give me all files that were modified in the last 2 days and are smaller than 1MB in size and begin with the letter 'h').

Check it out and see if you would like to add it to DSL. You could replace the existing file manager and desktop icon tool with this program, if needed.

PS:  Thank you for creating such a small but powerful distribution.  I am amazed by how much performance that you have squeezed into such a small package.

FYI,

Damn Small Linux uses the Fluxbox window manager.

To use the Rox filer Pinboard function with the Blackbox/Fluxbox window manager, the FAQ suggests that you turn on the 'Pass all backdrop mouse clicks to window manager' and 'Blackbox root menus hack' options in the "Compatibility Section" of the Options box.

Also, here is a screenshot of somebody's desktop. This person is using Fluxbox + Rox filer for their system:

beautifull
but doesn't this file manager use libraries or need dependencies that aren't in dsl?
would it need more packages to be added to the distro 8apart the one of the program itsef)

bye

according to freshmeat.net, rox-filer only depends on GTK libraries and on libxml, so there isn't a big list of stuff.

According to the package list on the DSL website, the GTK 1.2 libraries are already part of the DSL CDROM.

So the important thing to do is:

(1) Make sure that you download the version of Rox Filer that is built with "GTK1.2".  There is also a version of Rox Filer that is built on "GTK2.0".  Avoid the 2.0 version if you want to keep your dependencies to a minimum.

(2) Install libxml

Or just get the Debian package of the older Rox Filer from here:

http://www.janw.easynet.be/rox/i386/index.html

I have not done a hard disk install of DSL, so I cannot try it our yet. The *.deb file size is 643KB.
