I think this is a great idea.  I'm sold on DSL.  With DSL installed on a pendrive or on a business card-sized CD, you really can have a penguin in your pocket.

I'd definitely buy a couple of DSL t-shirts, a cap, and a bumper sticker.   I think one or two color printing on t-shirts would be fine, but I'd have no problem paying $25 or so for a fancy multi-screen version, especially with a good quality heavy weight cotton or cotton/hemp t-shirt.

How about something simpler for those of us who spend most f their time in cube farms? Im thinking...

* DSL coffee cup - just a simple old ceramic mug, preferably cheap, say $3-5

* DSL penguin toy - dont have to be specially made, just buy regular penguin toys and slap DSL stickers on 'em, say $6-10

* "DSL Inside" laptop sticker, say $1

* DSL Tie (dark but not balck, with mini tux on end), say $10

IMHO things in the shop are too expensive. I mean $7 for a mini-CD ad $53 for a 128Mb pen drive? You can get 128Mb Pen drives on the net for $16 shipped.

Also, it would be nice if we could get cheaper shipping on mutiple items. I mean 3 mini-CDs for $10 shipped would seem a lot better than 1 for $7, and then I would have one for me, one for a spare, and one to give to someone else to try out.

Those are really nice ideas, but I believe you prices are a little low.  I was thinking it would be around $8 US to get 50-100 mugs made.  $10 for a custom tie seems a little low as well.  $25 for a heavy cotton tee in two colors?  Maybe, but they need to make money for the cause and your prices are lower than what they would pay for the materials.  I doubt they'd like loosing money on the merchandise as well as not making money on dsl.

I mean, hey, if I could make great stuff cheap, I'd be rich too.

If your going to make a shirt, is it a good idea to tie it to a trade show, and sell them there?  You could charge a little more, but your sales might be higher if the design was cool and served as a momento of the event.  Something like "The biggest 50 Meg linux distro at Linuxconn" or whatever it is.

After a quick googling I found places like http://www.discountmugs.com that will print an 11 ounce white mug with a single color logo for $0.75/mug (for 75+ mugs). No need to go crazy with full 24bit color :-)

I'm currently trying to get my 3-colour version (white, black, and orange, for black or non-white shirts) ready for a test run, hopefully have some done in the next few weeks, unforseen problems excluded.
I think I could make them for maybe Aus$20 on decent shirts with say $3-5 going to John and co.  My theory was that if I can set the screen process up right, you could have DSLers printing them in various countries, so you can just find your closest country / state to save on international postage.  But it would be more a labour of love rather than a money-making thing, whoever prints them would only be able to take a couple of bucks per shirt max to still make the price acceptable.  I don't really want to have to hand-screen a few thousand of the suckers!
