Ideas...  And thoughts to start threads.

What I really really like about DSL is the toram option during boot.  There is zero waste on the CD and I can get things done.  You can't even do that with KNOPPIX straight (well not without paging or LOTS of ram)

However there is a bit of a hassle (maybe just becuase I am new to live cds) with the backup and restore schemes.  I would like to simplify those hassles and just have /home /usr maybe /etc all mount directly to a usb drive. (personally i use a pcmcia hard disk)  Just think that most pen drives now are actually getting larger then DSL itself...

Think about it, you run DSL for the first time, select your point drives and have DSL copy all the defualt software there. Then reboot.  The next time just say "dsl toram mount=/dev/dhe1" and you DSL will run from memory but look to disk for user applications and config info...  There can even be options to copy the man pages onto usb. (I do miss man pages a little also)

I think its a the best hybrid.  Installs of new applications wouldn't require learning to remaster the distro (of which I can't do yet).  You would still get the fast loading "toram" option for key parts of the system but you wouldn't have "work arounds" for normal linux tasks like modifying config files under /etc.

Well...?

I'll admit I skipped from the first post to this reply, so this might have been suggested:

partimage!  It'd be great if partimage was on the CD.

I'm going to find out how I can customize DSL and put stuff like FF, partimage, GAIM, GFTP and a few other things in and make my own version for personal use.  As long as it fits on a 210MB mini-CD-R.

Oh, and did I mention DSL is freaking awesome?  Nice work!  Loaded to dual channel Corsair XMS it is amazingly fast.

I really miss the Scite editor in the latest DSL release.  Vim is ok.  It's powerful and efficient, with macros, and I like that you can use the keyboard for everything so you don't waste time mousing around.  Beaver looks OK, but Scite had syntax highlighting for more languages.  I went back to using the previous version of DSL because I like Scite.

I you do keep just vim, is it possible to use one that has syntax highlighting, like the version of vim Knoppix has does?  Does that take up a lot of disk space?

Hehehehe...
I thought the same thing...  Beaver was crawl speed on big files, and the
screen rewrites were not redrawing correctly.. I missed scite....

So, I did an apt-get install scite from the stable,
and copied the installed files/dirs into my filetool.lst

added - /usr/bin/scite
added - /usr/share/scite

backup like usual, and reboot..
Restore from backup, and.....

Ahh..  the ol' scite back to stay...
Now I've got both !! ....
SOMEONE should pull the scite out of 0.7.1, and make a .dsl extension.. :)
Hint, hint....
