Quick questions |

Still pounding on it. Super-solid here so far (nice job and thanks!)--more machines to try. Got a list going and I'll be back when I get it concise. For now, questions:
1) Is there anything in here that'll do screen dumps besides xwd (the format of which is ~low utility w/o convert from imagemagick).
2) Seeing feh and fbi for images...and mtpaint--is that it?
Thanks. And thanks again for doing it at all--this is deeply cool to have in 2024!

Trying to install Zoom |

Tried to install Zoom today since it seems that the webcam on my laptop is ready to go. Zoom isn't part of the regular debian repository but it can be downloaded. So I installed the dependencies and then, as said, I tried to install it. Unfortunately it depends on several packages that are held back with the antix desktop metapackage. In other words it didn't work in the present environment. So I'll have to wait for the next version of dsl that probably will sort out a lot of the present snags.

I remember vividly how cool it was to run DSL entirely from RAM. So, that's a feature I would like to see in upcoming releases. That would be really nice and since the specs of the computers (even older ones) usually have sufficient RAM to be able to use that boot option I think many users would like it.

apt upgrade |

I did a bit of testing. Before running an upgrade you will need to hold back the antiX package that will update the desktop application defaults. If not it will override the default terminal, browser and editor so those menu items will not work any longer. It will override without checking what is installed.
To avoid this open up a terminal and paste in this command:
sudo apt-mark hold desktop-defaults-antix
In the next alpha release I will make sure this is already taken care of.

I have installed DSL on a 64Gb USB on SONY VAIO VGN SR290J purchased on the Year 2010.
DSL is working fine and fast enough.
Initial boot time is quite high even upto 10 Min.
I have a issue only after upgrade. The GUI termianl is missing after upgrade.
I had to re install DSL just to retain my terminal in GUI mode.
man command is available for limited (but useful) commands.
info command is missing, but not much of an issue on ALPHA mode of the OS
Did anyone else faced any similar issue, afer update / upgrade
Any response is appreciated

firefox, firefox-esr & sound (tl;dr: choose firefox-esr) |

If you are going to install Firerfox via apt you have the option of firefox and forefox-esr. For simmplicity I believe most people will be happier with choosing firefox-esr.
If you want to use the firefox package there will be issues with audio because it works with PulseAudio instead of Alsa.
To overcome this in the term do:
apulse firefox
That will launch firefox with pulse emulation and give firefox sound.
This isn't necessary with firefox-esr, it will work with Alsa instead of PulseAudio.

I can see in the VMWare bar that my webcam, a Realtech Integrated_Webcam HD, and the fingerprint device, a Shenzhen Goodix Fingerprint Device, are detected. Can those devices be enabled or are they just detected by the virtualization software(VMWare)?
