Installation doubts
#11

(05-14-2024, 12:27 PM)grindstone Wrote: We need more.  What have you tried--exactly.  How are you booting--exactly. xorg=siliconmotion? vesa? fbdev?  nothing?

I'm booting with nothing, just appending "3" in the grub file. Then I run "sudo Xorg -configure".

Quote:What versions of the existing driver

xf86-video-siliconmotion 1.7.9

Quote:and what version you built (1.7.9.10?)

xf86-video-siliconmotion 1.7.10

Quote:As an old linux person, you know the drill.

Yes, I'm an old newbie and the "Debian side" of Linux is mostly unknown to me.

Quote:Read the boot logs carefully--what files are not found--anything kernel-related?  Have you upgraded kernels--do the versions match in the Xorg log?

Mine is a from-scratch installation. Just downloaded the DSL iso image, then run "apt upgrade".

Quote:In fact, just post that stuff:

sudo inxi -Fxv6

And last but not least: I was so worried about X that didn't realize that the swap partition was not active nor listed in /etc/fstab.
Maybe this is the reason:

Partition table entries are not in disk order.

The positions of sda4 and sda5 should be inverted, since the swap partition is inside the extended sda3.
How to fix it? Thanks again.

This is the problem, I think. Run xrandr and choose as low a resolution as possible. Then run xrandr --mode 800x600 (for example) to set it.

It doesn't matter that the partitions aren't in order. It doesn't make much sense to have an extended partition with only one logical partition in it, but it's not a problem.

OK thank you for hanging in there and doing all that. Give us a bit to look this all over.

In the meantime, if you have not activated the swap (not sure why that didn't happen during inst?), for now you can add the line for it in fstab if it's not already in there.

lsblk --fs

will give you the UUID number for your /dev/sda5. Then make sure you have a line for it:

Code:
UUID=theoneyougotwithlsblk none            swap    sw              0       0

in /etc/fstab. Save that so its active at bootup going forward, then try to turn it on

swapon -a

and check with

free -m or df -h etc to make sure it's on/right. Not sure how you got that far w/o it being detected or got a module built w/o it, but...tip of the hat Smile

While I'm here, does it even have the card0 file in there?

ls -l /dev/dri

Thanks again for the patience and tip of the hat on the dogged-pursuit. You are helping to shake-out things and teh testing helps.

I wonder where does that 1024x1024 come from. It's the resolution of a tile, isn't it?

Is it possible to run xrander without X working? It gives me "can't open display". And export DISPLAY=:0 doesn't work.

My extended partition had six partitions inside. I had to delete them along with the primary /boot in order to install DSL.
That's because it seems it's not possible to install DSL on a multi-partitioned disk via command line (cli-installer): no space left on device. [ please-please-please put it as a first entry in your to-do list].
On my disk there are also two existing primary NTFS partitions for Win2000, so I had the only choice to make another primary for DSL and put the swap into the extended.

/dev/dri/card0 has never been created so far.

Oops, xrandr can't run in text mode. Try replacing "3" with "video=800x600".

Does lspci -v tell you how much graphics memory you have? At what resolution did you run Windows 2000?

I suspect you can create a /boot partition in text mode if you create it manually with fdisk and mount it. I know that some people want a separate /boot partition; I never saw the point.

The X prober looks like it had trouble configuring on this one--as Yan said, the bit depth is too high. If we just do the math, 800x600 x 8bit fits in 4MB of VRAM, but not 1024x768.

But even if we set a reasonable Screen section in the xorg.conf, say, by changing

DefaultColorDepth 16

to 8 etc, there's still the bit about why udev (I think?) didn't create card0...and I don't know enough Debian yet to answer that question (I'm new here, too).

Question: When everything dies, are you user demo or user root? Reason is that Xorg -configure man page states to use actual root (uid 0). Maybe being actual root produces a different result? If you were demo, maybe do a real switch to root and run the config if you were not uid 0 before.

Soooo, yes, the panel itself is 1024x768 but at 4MB, that only fits 4-bit and the Lynx video might not support that from the looks of it. I'm still searching.

What happens if you su - to root and run your configure but with an extra depth argument?

Xorg -configure -depth 8

Did you pull-down the man pages and that stuff so you can at least review that? Thanks for hanging in there and working on it. Seems close Smile

Quote:I suspect you can create a /boot partition in text mode if you create it manually with fdisk and mount it.
I did it, but then the installation failed because of no space left on device.
It seems to me the installer only consider one partition (else why didn't it used the other ones?).
Or, if a bigger partition size in needed, it should be stated or warned.

Quote:I know that some people want a separate /boot partition; I never saw the point.
We are talking about VERY old hardware, belonging to an era when the BIOS was limited.

How to use a 20 Gb hd if the BIOS recognizes up to 10 Gb only (this is the case of my laptop)?
Splitting it into partitions.

How to put and boot two OSs on the same disk if they occupy more room than the detected one?
Keeping the bootable part of the OSs within the 1024th cylinder (roughly about 1/3 of the disk capacity).
That's because Windows can't boot if put at the end of the disk and at that time it used only one partition.
Nowadays the modern versions of Windows have a boot partition as well (they have "linuxed" it).

Quote:When everything dies, are you user demo or user root? Maybe being actual root produces a different result? What happens if you su - to root and run your configure but with an extra depth argument?
I often run as root. No, same errors.

Quote:there's still the bit about why udev (I think?) didn't create card0...and I don't know enough Debian yet to answer that question
This is the very crucial point and if you googled it you realize that it's not a Debian problem, it's a universal problem.
So far I've been unable to find a solution and hope that you gurus can.
Please take your time. Thank you.

When you say that with video="800x600", it "loops", what exactly do you mean? Is it an improvement over the previous situation?

Apparently your Silicon Motion GPU has 16 MB of memory.

fd0 is the floppy drive. Do you know whether it's supposed to work? Does it matter if it doesn't?

Edit: try Xorg -configure again. Is the error about "Not enough video memory" still there?

It loads Xorg again and again without succeding.

I wonder which is the correct data. Windows says 4.
And that could be the point: does it works on 4 and not on 16?

It works great on Windows and using some boot floppy disks, including linux mini-distros.
It would be logic to get it working on any OS.
It is important on old hardware, especially for managing BIOS.

dmesg
Code:
[   11.011638] floppy: module verification failed: signature and/or required key missing - tainting kernel

Not yet, just "open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory"

Yeah, lspci sees 16M, X sees 4M. The guys 20-yr old XF86 config used vesa and fbdev and worked...they don't 20-some years later (my knees used to work 20 years ago, too). If we get lucky elsewhere, we can probably still steal that modeline later.

If we just listen to what X is telling us:

Code:
[    65.950] (II) The server relies on udev to provide the list of input devices.
If no devices become available, reconfigure udev or disable AutoAddDevices.
Reinstall udev (eudev) and see if we can get the devices populated w/o trying by hand

sudo apt-get install --reinstall udev

And the second bit is to add this line:

Code:
Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"

inside the ServerFlags section at the top of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.in (presumably only if the udev thing worked to create card0 and if the error still persists, otherwise this may be counter-productive)

Boot, see what happens and let us know.
